What I learned and loved at the
International Literacy Day - with Gender focus
Women being the motor and focus of literacy programs
Action only happens at the grass roots
Public-private partnerships can work and need to be stimulated
Online tools are handy but keeping mind that it is about illiteracy (so also provide other options to connect)
I saw story-materials for the African woman to be empowered and in the meanwhile being a trigger to learn to read.
Don’t ask people to become literate for the literacy purpose, they have their own reasons, it being… dignity, trust, better money, status, family support…
Take in account traditions and community structures (patriarchal..)
Do it out of the class room too
Ask what their most important things are in life and what they want in life (learns you their important words and values)
Teach community selected individuals who teach the others.
Some want to ‘read the world’
It is possible only through interaction (via means of the tools) and ‘bezieling’.
(PS Charlotte, heb mooie materialen voor je!)
